Riverton is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is portion of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 38,753 at the 2010 census, but has back grown to 44,440. Riverton is located in the brusquely growing southwestern corner of the Salt Lake Valley.

Located in the southern end of Salt Lake Valley, the first people of European heritage to conscious in the area that is now Riverton granted in the mid-1850s. These yet to be settlers scattered widely along the river bottom in incompetent dugout homes. The town was originally referred to as “Gardnerville” prior to shifting its herald to Riverton. Riverton’s initial growth was slow because of the nonattendance of water for irrigation. When more water became available, the town began to grow. Eventually three canals were built to extend water from the easily reached Jordan River to the benchland areas, providing irrigation for agricultural uses to the larger area.

By the initiation of World War I in 1914, with its new irrigation water and influx of people, Riverton prospered as an agricultural community. Its rich business district was after that evident at this time.
